Mark your
calendars for
“Levittown Days:
A 60th
Anniversary
Celebration,”
June 23-24, 2012
at Bolton
Mansion with the
goal to share
and preserve
museum-quality
Levittown
history,
including
sharing photos
and gathering
oral histories
from original
residents.
Visitors can
enjoy some food,
music, and
explore exhibits
that make
history fun,
like a time
capsule, a photo
gallery, and
Levittown
Trivia.
The event
will be covered
by a BBC
film crew as
part of a
year-long on
Levittown, PA
and is a
collaboration of
local groups
including
Friends of
Bolton Mansion,
WBCB, the
Levittown
history website
www.Levittowners.com,
Temple
University, and
authors of
national
publisher
Arcadia’s
“Levittown”
book.
Varied events
are planned for
area residents,
history buffs,
and returning
visitors who
grew up in
Levittown.
And, original
“Levittowners”
who bought these
homes brand new
in the 1950’s,
will tell their
stories.
Historians will
be on hand to
document their
oral histories
using
Smithsonian
guidelines.
“Original
Levittown
residents
represent a
wealth of
history that has
not been well
documented,”
James Snow,
Bolton Mansion’s
Director
points out.
“Since Levittown
is made up of
multiple
townships, there
was no
designated group
responsible for
tracking the
history of the
place,” he
notes.
“Levittown
Days,”
celebrating “all
things
Levittown” is
timed perfectly.
This
year, events
will be held
Saturday, June
23rd
and Sunday, June
24th.
(Back in 1952,
June 23rd
was Levittown’s
official move-in
day).
The event
grew out of a
Facebook group
called
“Levittown, PA
60th
Anniversary” and
is attracting
out-of-towners
too.
Some are
planning family
reunions around
it. The days at
Bolton Mansion
will include
mainly
activities that
are free and
open to the
public.
The
committee also
expects to plan
an evening event
with
entertainment at
a local
Levittown
establishment.
